New Techniques to Understand Stain Resistance Properties of Waterbased Architectural Paints

Today’s consumers are looking into interior water-based paints with Low Volatile Organic Compounds (VOC), superior aesthetics,and performance properties, namely, stain resistance. Stain resistance is the ability of the coating to withstand discoloration caused by contact to household stains. There is a concerted effort in the coating industry to develop paints with improved resistance to hydrophilic and hydrophobic stains. Achieving stain-resistant properties for paints require a combination of tailored polymer dispersions, balanced paint formulation ingredients and efficient use of rheology modifiers. This study details new approaches to understand stain-resistant properties of coatings. Molecular modeling simulation and Atomic Force Microscopy have been used to study stain interaction and coating surface chemistry. Additionally, a technique based on Quartz Crystal Microbalance to study adsorption and de-sorption of stains will also be highlighted. The objective of the study is to understand the mechanism of stain interaction that will help in formulating improved stain-resistant coatings.
